ASIA MINOR. Uncertain. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Hemiassarion (Copper, 18 mm, 2.94 g, 1 h), circa 1st-2nd centuries. Poppy between two grain ears. Rev. Anchor entwined by serpent. Lindgren I A884B (as Ankyra in Phrygia). Very fine.

The Lindgren coin was attributed to Ankyra in Phrygia based upon a similarity to Imhoof-Blumer, KM, p. 524, 1, which bears the ethnic of the city on the reverse. However, that coin differs from the present issue in style and by showing a plain anchor without a serpent. Furthermore, it is hard to see why a polis should have issued an anonymous coin with unspecific iconography in this era, alongside a named type, which is why we have preferred to assign our example to an uncertain mint for the time being
